Stepping foot into this distinct Swedish-style town located in Tobetsu, on Hokkaido Island, one is transported out of Japan and straight into another country.

The Japanese town, Sweden Hills, was built after the Swedish ambassador at the time had visited the area and noted how similar the climate and landscape were to Sweden. Because of this, they started the construction of Swedish Hills in 1984, and today there are 420 Swedish-inspired houses standing in the area.

Sweden Hills (スウェーデンヒルズ, Suēden Hiruzu) is a Swedish-style village in Tōbetsu, Hokkaidō in Japan. [1] The style of the houses are Falu red wooden houses. The idea of a Swedish-styled village came when a Swedish ambassador visited the nearby town center of Tobetsu and thought that the climate was quite similar to the Swedish climate.
