Scotland Road was/still is a prominent road in Liverpool, a sort of main artery for the city which was heavily travelled. Much of the crew were from Liverpool (and White Star Line's headquarters was there). It was an affectionate nickname as it gave the crew an easy way to traverse the length of the ship.
